What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical is a required medical exam for commercial drivers to ensure they are physically qualified to safely operate a commercial motor vehicle. All exams are conducted in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidelines.

What’s Included in the Exam

During your DOT physical, we will:

  • Review your medical history

  • Check height, weight, and vital signs

  • Measure blood pressure and heart rate

  • Perform vision and hearing tests

  • Complete a urinalysis (screens kidney function—not a drug test)

  • Evaluate overall physical fitness for commercial driving

Medical Conditions That May Affect Certification

Certain conditions may require additional documentation or result in a shorter certification period, including:

  • High blood pressure

  • Diabetes

  • Sleep apnea

  • Heart conditions

  • Use of specific medications

If additional clearance is needed, our team will explain exactly what’s required and guide you through next steps.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

  • Valid government-issued photo ID

  • Glasses or contacts (if you use them for driving)

  • A list of current medications

  • Any relevant medical records or clearance letters (if applicable)
